Angola: June Irene Johnston, 85 of Mishawaka and Angola, passed away on July 19, 2015, at Kingston at Dupont in Fort Wayne. She was born in Keyser Twp. DeKalb Co., on April 10, 1930 to Elmer Douglas and Faye (Sanders) Johnston. She graduated from Waterloo-Grant Twp. High School in 1948, from Ball State Teachers College in 1952, and received her Master’s degree in 1955, also from Ball State. As a Fullbright Scholar she studied in Spain. June was a dedicated teacher of Spanish and Latin with a 37 year-long career at Mishawaka High School.
She was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church of Mishawaka and, in retirement, of Calvary Lutheran Church of Angola. She belonged to and participated in numerous organizations and enjoyed playing the piano for church services at area nursing homes. She loved to travel both within the US and internationally and prized destinations included Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Italy, England, Canada, Hawaii, and national parks. June was well-known as an animal lover and as an avid doll collector.
June is survived by two nieces and one nephew; Paula J. Fike and her husband James C. of Garrett, Kalista A. Johnston of Garrett, and Douglas E. Johnston and his wife Carol of Fort Wayne. Also surviving are great-nieces; Caitlin A. Johnston of New York, NY, Olivia C. Johnston of Fort Wayne and Callaleigh Fike-Corkwell and her husband Aaron and son Silas R. Corkwell of Huntertown.
Funeral Services will be 1pm Thursday July 23, 2015 at H.E. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home, 108 S. West St. Angola with Rev. Donald E. Meyers officiating. Burial is in Christian Union Cemetery, Garrett. Calling is 2 hours prior to service Thursday from 11 to 1 at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to Calvary Lutheran Church in Angola.
