Lagrange: James E. Harter, 83, formerly of Butler, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Cameron Community Memorial Hospital in Angola. James was born in Butler January 30, 1935 to the late Clark E. and Anna Rhoda (Obendorf) Harter. He graduated from Butler High School in Butler.
He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service. He was a Viet Nam veteran. He married Soon O.(Chung) Harter when he was stationed in Korea on March 13, 1959, and she survives. James was a self-employed truck driver until he retired. He loved hunting, fishing, playing the guitar and banjo and he enjoyed blue grass music and fast pitch softball.
Surviving are two daughters; Soonja (Nick) Brouer of Lagrange and Susan (Joe) Garberick of Middlebury and one son James E. Harter, Jr. of Big Turkey Lake in Stroh. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and a brother Rex Obendorf of Garrett. He was preceded in death by three daughter; Shirley Harter, Angela Harter and Marilee Ritchie and a sister Marilee Dangler.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at H.E. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 108 S. West St. Angola at 1 PM with Pastor Norm Fuller officiating. Viewing will be private. Burial will be at a later date.
