Obituary

Suzanne "Sue" L. Drewes, 84, went home to the Lord on Sunday, October 17, 2021 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after battling Parkinson’s.  She was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 8, 1936 to Elmer and Erma (Glanzman) Reetz in the family’s home on Glanzman Road.

Sue worked at the Ohio Bell after she graduated from Libbey High School.  She met Richard (Dick) through her friend Renee and Dick’s friend Marvin.  They were married on January, 25, 1958 and were married 63 years.  Their families made many happy memories together, including yearly trips to Cedar Point.

Sue dedicated her life to her husband and children.  She volunteered at Mayfair Elementary School with the PTA until the children moved to Junior High.  She then became active at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in downtown Toledo where they were members.

Dick’s job at Dana Corporation took them to Janesville, Wisconsin in 1978.  When the plant closed in 1980, they transferred to Fort Wayne, Indiana.  They lived in Fort Wayne until Dick retired and they built their current home on Snow Lake in Fremont, Indiana.  Sue helped make the banners for their church in Fort Wayne when they lived there.

Sue enjoyed sewing and made most of the children’s clothing when they were growing up.  The family weddings were a busy time for her.  She made bridesmaids dresses, veils and ring bearer suits.  She always made her dresses for special occasions, including her children’s weddings.  When the grandchildren were born, she made clothing for them, including smocked dresses and beach jackets to wear at the lake.  She made Cabbage Patch dolls when those were popular.

Sue always had the grandchildren spend a week at their house every summer.  She took them school shopping to get them an outfit for school, they went to the park and other fun activities.

In 1986, they bought a cottage on Snow Lake.  The family spent many, many weekends swimming, boating, skiing, tubing and fishing.  After a day of playing on the lake or on rainy days, time was spent playing games.  When Sue knew who was going to be there, she always made their favorite kind of cookies.  For the past few years, she enlisted Dick to help her bake them, until she couldn’t do it anymore.

When Dick retired, they replaced the cottage with their current home.  Sue and Dick enjoyed paddle boating around the lake during the week when the lake was not busy.  She was a member of the Sewing Sisters at Peace Lutheran Church in Fremont, Indiana until her Parkinson’s symptoms prevented her from participating.

Sue is survived by her loving husband, Richard, children Denise Stilwell (Greg), Doug (Peg) and Cheryl Mawhinney (Mike), grandchildren Jackie (Mike), Jeremy (Becca), Aaron (Brittany), Mike (Sharee), Nicole (Manny), Mary (Cody), David, Nicholas, Shannon and Nathan, great-grandchildren Kaden, McKenzie, Aiden, Clay, Raleigh, Riley, Mason, Jaden, Christopher, Anna, Lily, Addy, Freyja and Fie, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Phyllis Walter and Daniel Reetz.

A Celebration of Life for Sue will be Noon, Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Peace Lutheran Church, 355 IN-120, Fremont, Indiana, with calling one hour prior to the service.
