Larry and I served together during Viet Nam and were close in a way that few who never served in the military can relate to. We were sometimes mistaken for brothers by people who didn't know us. I hadn't seen Larry in years but were reconnected by a former shipmate a few months ago. I am so glad I had that last chance to talk to my old friend.

I also served with Larry about the USS MARS.. Larry was a great guy and always had a bit smile and a handshake for everyone.. Larry owned a dog named Korky when we were in Japan and when he left to go to another duty station Larry asked me to take the dog because he knew I would give him a good home.. That was one of the best things about Larry.. He had a great heart and wasn't afraid to show his emotions and you always knew right where you stood with him.. Even if you were a dog.. I was honored to serve with him

I served with Larry in the Navy on the USS Mars. I lost contact with him for over 40 years. I found him on the computer in September of 2015. I talked with him on the phone at that time. We talked about 45 minutes. He was one hell-of-a-great guy. We had some good times together. I'm very sorry for Larry's family. He will be missed by me and by many.

We were sorry to hear of the loss that you have all experienced with Larry's early death. We have fond memories of his free spirit and heart-felt laughter.

Dave and Chris and Marcia have lifetime memories of the back trail rides at Big Sur, Larry's laughter at us when we didn't know about California spiders and wildlife, and the sharing of Paragon Falcons.
Most of all, the entire Bird family from Michigan
appreciated the love and protection that Larry gave to his sister Caryn. He was there for her so many times when no one else was. For her life and love, we thank Larry!
Blessings to you all!

At least we were able to reconnect and share these last few years...not long enough, but so much better than not at all. My deepest sympathy to his survivors.

Larry was a good man. He was "caretaker" during the 80's to 90's at Mill Creek, my family's property on the Big Sur coast of central California for over a decade, during a period when my brothers and I would bring groups of friends from metro LA for extended weekends. He was welcoming and outgoing and often hung out with the rest of the gang while we were there.
We spent many late nights in front of the fireplace in an old outdoor chimney from a house that once stood on the property, but had burned before any of us had been there. Larry maintained that spot as well as extensive brush-clearing elsewhere on the property, given the constant reminder of fire danger. Despite various major fires in the region during his watch, our property was never threatened, much to his credit. So it was always there and ready for us partiers to enjoy it whenever we could arrange to get there.

Later in his life he went back home to Indiana. We engaged another caretaker whose son currently does the job. My dad''s generation sold the Mill Creek property since then, but we all have those memories like they were yesterday.

We pretty much had lost touch with Larry, but a few years ago I stumbled across him on Facebook, so we had fairly often been trading comments about politics and culture and news events. All of my immediate family, and some of my cousins who also knew him, also friended him, so he was back having re-joined the family. He was aware that we lost my brother last year, and Larry had known him during the high school years, so he naturally had a few colorful recollections.

I believe I had gathered Larry was dealing with some medical issues lately, but evidently they were more serious than he generally made known. He was a tough bird and really not in the habit of drawing attention to himself, but rather seeming to mostly focus on the family that was most important in his life, and clearly his first priority.

My family will remember him as the friendly and charming guy who kept our home-away-from-home, while we were going thru our young-adulthood period.
Sorry to hear we have all lost him, but I am certain that there are a lot of great memories remaining, after the pain of loss becomes somewhat less-intense with time. No doubt he left a legacy of love and kindness, since that was how he lived his life.
